Sports Illustrated's Forgotten Pioneer

In the Mad Men era of magazine journalism, Virginia Kraft was a globe-trotting writer and a deadly shot with a rifle. Why hasn't anyone heard of her?

Kraft's career was a study in contradiction, as she navigated the Mad Men era of #magazine #publishing as a woman.

Despite being the only female editor on the SI masthead in 1970, she failed to support other women working at Time Inc. who were part of a gender discrimination suit against the publisher.

Virginia Kraft hunted with the Shah of Iran, General Franco of Spain, and the Emperor of Ethiopia.

She was the first woman to compete in a major dogsled event in Alaska, and likely the only mother of four to take down Big Five game across six continents — often wearing Chanel No. 5 while on the hunt.

The SI writer who dropped by Hemingway's home uninvited was Virginia Kraft, who had more than 100 bylines at the legendary publication in the same era as Plimpton, Deford, and Blount.

So, why haven't you heard of this pioneering adventure writer?

Chances are, your answer would be "George Plimpton."

Maybe "Roy Blount Jr."

Or "Frank Deford."

But you'd be wrong.

A writer for Sports Illustrated once knocked on Ernest Hemingway's door unannounced. Hemingway recognized the reporters's byline, and the two spent the morning drinking together.

When you hear that story, who do you think the journalist was?

LONG SHADOW connects the dots on 40 years of far-right activity, showing how ideas once on the fringe moved into the mainstream, leading to Jan. 6th.

Episode 1, "The Spark," explores how the modern far-right movement was born from the flames of a devastating tragedy—the 1993 siege at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas.
