OTD in 1914 Porth's Percy Jones becomes the first Welsh World boxing champion when he took the IBU flyweight title off Bill Ladbury in the Londoner's backyard

Jones was later poisoned by gas at the Somme and incurred an injury that eventually required his leg to be amputated

Eventually died of trench fever in 1922 on Christmas Day, a day shy of his 30th birthday
