Strike of the Indigenous Wayúu in Colombia

It is not only in France that young people and society as a whole are fighting back through strikes. Also in northern Colombia, the Wayúu indigenous community has begun an indefinite strike. 11 main roads in La Guajira are blocked by protesters (see photo).

They are accusing the Petro government of disregarding their basic rights in areas such as drinking water supply, education and the promotion of alternative energy solutions. In the process, the indigenous community is being pushed into a deeper and deeper crisis.

The Wayúun have written a proposal for a solution that includes eleven points and will be presented to the president.

Some friends in York have just set up a solidarity project for people who have crossed the UK border without permission (legends every one) and been dispersed to that city.

Magnitude 5.9 earthquakes: deaths and hundreds injured in #Iran earthquake
At least three dead and 400 injured in Iran earthquake
At least three people were killed and more than 400 injured in a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that struck northern Iran, on Sunday.

The quake struck late last night near the city of #Khoy, located in Iran's northwestern province of West Azerbaijan and close to the border with Turkey, reported the Seismological Centre of Iran under the University of Tehran.
The tremor was followed by at least 10 aftershocks.
So far, authorities have reported the deaths of three people, while 447 have been injured.
The Red Crescent Society has sent two aircraft to the area to assist in rescue operations, search for people and assist survivors with tents, blankets and food.
The Khoy area was hit by a 5.4 magnitude earthquake a fortnight ago that injured 120 people and damaged some 200 houses.
Iran is highly seismically active and numerous earthquakes are recorded...
The most severe to date in Iran occurred in December 2003 and June 1990, when 31,000 and 37,000 people lost their lives, respectively.
More recently, in November 2017 a 7.3 magnitude earthquake killed 620 people and injured more than 12,000 in the northwestern province of #Kermanshah.

#TyreNichols was brutally beaten by officers connected to the SCORPION (Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace In Our Neighborhoods) Unit. This unit was established in the fall of 2021, amid growing cries around 'rising crime.'

The unit was known for targeting 'hot spots' with special officers dressed in street clothes.

This mirrors similar units, such as the Gun Trace Task force in #Baltimore that was established in the wake of the uprising there, which kicked off following the police murder of Freddie Grey. Through that unit, under the cover of getting guns off the street and reducing the murder rate, police systematically fleeced the local Black community of cash and engaged in a variety of illegal behavior.

In #Memphis, we see a similar situation play out: out of the ashes of the George Floyd uprising, instead of defunding the police and shifting resources into schools, programs, and infrastructure, cities doubled down and gave police more money to 'combat crime,' aka come down harder on the same communities who were at the center of uprising.

Predictably, this resulted in only more death and police violence.
