Iguanas likely crossed the Pacific millions of years ago on a record-setting rafting trip

Iguanas may have pulled off a 5000 mile voyage on a raft of floating vegetation to get to Fiji. Researchers have long wondered how iguanas got to the collection of remote islands in the South Pacific. In a new study, they discovered that Fijian iguanas were most closely related to desert iguanas from North America, and that the two groups split off around 31 million years ago. The iguanas most likely floated to Fiji from North America on a mass of uprooted trees and small plants, snacking on vegetation along the way. The research published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Immigrants fuel growth in major US urban counties

The largest urban counties in the U.S. kept growing last year because of immigrants. Among those were the core counties of Houston, Miami and Phoenix, which grew by more people than any other counties in the country. The data is contained in new population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau Thursday. Without the immigrants, Harris County, Texas; Miami-Dade County, Florida; and Maricopa County, Arizona, would have had nobody moving there last year. That's because more people already in the country moved out of rather than into those counties.

Kuwait frees jailed Americans held on drug charges

Kuwait has released a group of American prisoners, including veterans and military contractors jailed for years on drug-related charges. That's according to Jonathan Franks, a representative for the detainees. The move Wednesday is seen as a goodwill gesture between two allies. The freed prisoners have been flown to New York amid a U.S. government push to bring home Americans jailed in foreign countries. Families of those detained have alleged their loved ones faced abuse while imprisoned in a country that bans alcohol and has strict drug laws. Others have criticized Kuwaiti police for bringing trumped-up charges and manufacturing evidence against them, allegations never acknowledged by Kuwait.

SpaceX delays flight to replace NASA's stuck astronauts after launch pad problem

A launch pad problem has forced a flight delay to replace NASA's two stuck astronauts. The new crew needs to get to the International Space Station before Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams can head home after nine months in orbit. Concerns over a critical hydraulic system arose less than four hours before the Falcon rocket’s planned evening liftoff from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center. The decision to cancel finally came down with less than an hour remaining in the countdown. Officials say the launch is off until at least Friday.
