Google is searching for answers: 25 years of Search

After controlling how the internet has been distributed for the past 25 years, the search giant now faces an existential threat in AI. Can it maintain relevance?

I don’t want to log in to your website

There’s no public commons on the web. It’s a race to the bottom, and the bottom is gross. You want me to log in to read? I think I simply will not read.

Simply incredible. Really makes you wonder why bother with the effort and planning around social strategy on a platform where this happens. https://www.theverge.com/2023/2/14/23600358/elon-musk-tweets-algorithm-changes-twitter
Elon Musk created a special system for showing you all his tweets first

After his Super Bowl tweet did worse numbers than President Biden’s, Twitter’s CEO ordered major changes to the algorithm. Twitter engineers built a system designed to ensure that Musk benefits from previously unheard-of promotion of his tweets to the entire user base.

So I had to return to a WordPress project for the first time in a while and wow...Gutenberg is everywhere. Very scalable and customizable but if you built a site before 2019, go back and rebuild it. It is very hard to wear a part-time developer hat, is what I'm saying.

Edit 2023-02-05: @ElenLeFoll has done a great video on using Debirdify. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMzB2h2noEA

Edit: Twitter has blocked Movetodon. Try one of the other services below.

Given that twitter is going to start charging for api usage next week, but has neglected to give anyone any info about rates, I recommend running https://www.movetodon.org/ one last time while you still can.

None of the migration tools will work after the 8th (give or take some timezones).

Here’s a list of similar services operating as of 2023-02-04

Debirdify https://debirdify.pruvisto.org
Fedifinder https://fedifinder.glitch.me
Twitodon https://twitodon.com
Mastodon Flock https://mastodon-flock.vercel.app

Flock is the easiest to use, despite the hilarious Windows 95 UI. It actually adds the follows to Mastodon, the others export a CSV file which you can import in the import/export section of your Mastodon preferences.

Twitodon found far fewer acounts when I used it (20 vs. 112). I don't recommend it.

Fedifinder scans lists as well. It also will recommend a Mastodon host to use based on where your friends are. (You can use it before you have a Mastodon account.)

Debirdify will search people who follow you as well. And also tells you which services it thinks you should use. Can also read lists, and gives a very long summary. But I get very confused as to what I'm exporting if I also do lists. Basically, if you want to import lists, do them first, they include everyone you follow. Also, don't freak if it just sits there for a while doing nothing--it will refresh the screen eventually (with great charts). But do double check and make sure there isn't an error in there about rate limits--it's hard to spot.

I miss the photos. I'd be really interested to see some #s about how filter use on Insta has changed over time. I predict it has plummeted in the last few years.
Now it's just a stream of tweet screenshots on my feed, interrupted by crypto/influencer/entrepreneur guys taking pictures of their car, or talking into their phone (in their car) about how I need to buy their sales system. (By my estimation there have to be 200 million of these accounts. I do not get it.)
Not much on Instagram in this, which continues to sink to the lowest possible level as a platform. When it first came out I used to actually take time composing photos, using filters, etc. The vibe was just...cool. No other way to describe it -- just incredibly visual.
Everyone needs to read this essay on the state of social and search: https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/

I don't know who needs to hear this but when I use an online service to do something simple like make a reservation for dinner I don't need several follow up reminder emails and text messages. We are all DROWNING in notifications.
