This is very sad but I blame the Victorians the most. They went nuts with "treatments" to prolong its life. Pouring cement into voids. Propping up the branches... all while the soil around it was compacted more and more by visitors cutting off the roots.

Meanwhile some hot summers have been killing some trees, so climate change is also to blame.
