In today's New York Times a Homeowner Association tried to force a Maryland couple with a native garden to change to a tidy lawn. The complaint was that their garden was "attracting rodents, deer, snakes and bats, and that they were planting shrubs and bushes in no particular order." Yes, in no particular order!

Legal proceedings ensued and there's now a state law forbidding homeowner associations from banning eco-friendly gardens.

They Fought the Lawn. And the Lawn’s Done.

After their homeowner association ordered them to replace their wildlife-friendly plants with turf grass, a Maryland couple sued. They ended up changing state law.

I used to make these fun (to me) end of year #lists of Best
Things I Found This Year, and put them on my handmade blog that I put together with an HTML editor. The NYT newsletter this morning discussed that, so it's on my mind again.

I'm afraid it's a sparse year compared to some, and I'm afraid that's largely my own fault. I didn't #explore life enough this year. My explorations have mostly been tiny, not grand, but I ought to make more of them while I still can.

On the mend, so to speak, from my first #cataract #surgery, which was Tuesday afternoon. Now I am far-sighted in only one eye, til next month. And forever relegated to reading glasses, but that's better than the all the time ones. I am actually avoiding much computer til my eye better adjusts to light, but wanted to say hi.

@liliales I'm like you, I follow people who I feel add value to my social media experience through humor or kindness; I appreciate dialogue with people from all over and with a range of backgrounds and interests.

I follow # of topics I find interesting but don't always participate in, like photography and art; I also follow topics for my own hobbies.

@liliales I agree. I was there on Twitter back in the day when it was a lot like this site is now. It does feel like a second chance to get it right this time and not let corporations and algorithms and billionaires take over.

@liliales Then you've come to the right place! Most of us here are focused on enjoying ourselves by interacting with others and building an awesome community.

We have a lot of photographers, artists, writers, and so many other creative minds so it's usually easy to find a conversation, make friends, or just enjoy the view if you need a break.

I don't have much time for "social media" this week, but I have been wondering how other people choose who to #follow here? Do you have that team followback urge? I vascillate on that.

Personally, I don't really have to be interested in what you're interested in to follow you, it's more like if you seem to have good spirit and humor, enthusiasm for something, but also maybe a range of interests rather than just one.

I like a little bit of #dialogue, doesn't have to be lots. How about you?

People are doing #7bookstoknowme now, and this one is tougher for me. I'm surrounded by 100s of books, have read many thousands. But I'm not sure they say a lot about me other than that I like word play, smart and playful dialogue, and watching people puzzle things out. It's something to ponder on a day off, though, and #7songstoknowme is certainly on the table of thought, as well. That could be easier, though keeping to 7 wouldn't be. I have composed several soundtracks of me over the years.

Good morning, friends. Have a new post up at my personal website, for those of you who like that sort of thing. Carnival rides! Dead guys! Haunted things! Chewing gum!

“So,” Viola says. “You know those carnival rides with the swings? The ones that spin and spin and raise up, and you’re going forty miles an hour in a stomach-churning circle that’s supposed to be f…
