All that "remember the alamo" mythology and such? Yea that meant the freedom to own slaves. Taking Mexican territories, all of our southwestern states still with Spanish names, so this region would still be open for slavery.

In the years after that, up to and during the civil war, enslaved Africans would escape to Mexico to gain their freedom. When Americans asked for their slaves back, Mexico said "there are no slaves here". And more than that, after gaining their freedom they'd arm themselves in Mexico, and return over the border to free more of their people.

Mexico's second president was a black/indigenous man named Vincente Guerrero, he's the one that abolished slavery in Mexico.
