A Tour Around Buck2, Meta's New Build System

An overview of Meta's new build system Buck2 and how it differs from Bazel

Roughly speaking I’m a tech optimist so this resonates for me
My TCL / Roku TV has just gotten steadily slower and less reliable over time. Was decently responsive when I purchased it 3 years ago but now it’s borderline unusable. Would not recommend.
Unpopular opinion: the biggest thing holding Mastodon back is actually the lack of an algorithmic feed. People don't want to admit it but there's a reason the corporate social networks always end up there, and it's not (directly) ads.
I made this point internally when I worked for Facebook but there were a litany of excuses as to why we couldn't do better. I'm sure if it had been a priority something could be done.
One of the most short sighted decision Google, Facebook, Twitter made was refusing to do "customer support" for the users. Just undermining trust and user experience at every turn. Just another example here: https://thereformedbroker.com/2023/05/01/why-i-deactivated-my-facebook-page/

Truly amazing how much Elon has torched his reputation first by Tweeting and then buying Twitter. There needs to be some version of “never meet your heros” but for Twitter.

San Francisco's decision to delay Algebra for all students until the 9th grade in the name of "equity," is a really bad one. Black parents didn't ask for this, and this strategy won't achieve the equity that they're looking for.

Hard to accept: A lot of "anti-woke" people believe that being woke is all just a lot of bad decisions like this. This belief is due to framing by the far-right: any bad policy is "woke." I help them understand that Black families don't want this and didn't ask for it.

I idolized Bob Lee not only because his name was on the top of many libraries and tools I used but because I learned who he was during his (brief?) retirement. It showed me there is more to life than being a leet coder and to know when to walk away. World lost a legend.
I only knew Bob Lee through his work and contributions to the Android community, but the news of his death is truly shocking. My condolences to his family, friends and coworkers that knew him well. What a terrible loss.
