In 1697, Frenchman Charles Perrault published "Tales and Stories of the Past with Morals," subtitled "Tales of Mother Goose". It contained such stories as "Little Red Riding Hood," "Cinderella," "Sleeping Beauty," "Puss in Boots," and "Bluebeard." Most people never heard of him, nor know that he pretty much single-handedly created the modern literary fairy-tale genre.

Amazing. The Greeks circa 200 BC built a finely-tooled, metal, analog computing device complete with intricately geared mechanism. This technology was then lost until the 18th century. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction.
