I think of Kierkegaard, 19th Century existentialist, as essentially part of the modern world, responding to the stresses of modernity. And so he was. But I just found out, reading his biography, that his father was born a serf in Jutland. (Bound to a church estate; hence the family name, which translates more or less to church-yard.)

The modern world has not been here very long.

I have difficulty thinking about transcendence without using the language of "two-worlds" mythologies (Buddhist and Christian.) It's not that I want to get out of this world. I want to get out of myself. I want to moult. I don't want to be buried alive in the duff of my own dead skin.

I got my COVID and flu shots yesterday. Expecting to be a bit sore and a lot tired today, I decided to make a very early start on my Inktober drawing. Growing up in Spain, I used to draw Don Quixote and Sancho heading towards the mountains a lot. So here's another one. The windmills in his day were probably dressed with canvas but I love them looking as dilapidated as he is (and poor Rocinante).
