@mhoye I've seen matrix rooms break with half that number. I can't imagine what kind of workload that would present to smaller homeservers that are part of those rooms.
@mhoye The attached GitHub readme does mention that Matrix was considered and discarded as being unable to handle the load of this many users and messages.
One of the most interesting things about this past week is that my follow list here is different than my usual hideout. I've been missing some rather interesting people in my days.

Update: we do know the server didn't go down on purpose and folks are working on bringing it back up and I really need to find the admin email so I can just ask them the next time.
