I'm late announcing this because I was trying to take my leave seriously, but as of 1st September I officially have a permanent position as Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Nottingham!

It's been a long road, but we made it.

Also, casualisation can do one.

Also also, I really need to stop falling off social media for months at a time...

@jesusmargar @simon_on_energy don't worry, I'm not barking at you! Just explaining why I don't think motions about linking or the worry about employers refusing the approval to consider USS undermine the claim.
@simon_on_energy @jesusmargar that's right, so saying that we were happy to put USS to the vote, and even to suspend *that* IA, but that the offer on 4F was nowhere near good enough to go out to a vote, would be a consistent stance.
@jesusmargar @simon_on_energy Second, the employers probably would try to take the USS offer off the table in that case, but why simply abide by their terms? "Who is acting in good faith" is a tricky game, and by showing willingness to move forward with one part whole recognising that the other part was not good enough out would challenge the employers. They'd then have to give an account that didn't suggest they were trying to use USS to divide the universities.
@jesusmargar @simon_on_energy First, I don't believe the resolutions make it impossible to say ANYTHING about one part separate from the other, and if they did, it would be crucial to make it clear that it was impossible to have any separation. That wasn't the process followed at the BDM - they recognised, as did branch meetings, that people would have different opinions about different parts.

Jeez what a day of holding my breath over what would happen with the strike. It's hard to see all the divides over this opening up, and hard to get it's a good idea to wade in too, but:

I think plausibly the employers wanted to use giving up on USS as a way to split pre and post 92s, and that it was right for it not to go to a vote. When the disputes are linked we shouldn't expose members to the risk of one dispute getting thrown out to resolve the other.

Uh oh, fell off social media for a while - back in time to say solidarity with junior doctors striking, plus a reminder to everyone that 'junior doctor' doesn't mean '1 year out of medical school', it covers everyone but consultants!

Hope there'll be plenty of crisps on the picket line. #lovecrispshateracism

UCU has confirmed it will reballot 70,000 members to allow industrial action to continue in universities for the rest of the academic year if employers refuse to meet staff demands over pay, conditions and pensions.

Under anti-trade union laws, industrial action mandates must be refreshed every six months. The union served notice to employers for the reballot on 13 February, with ballot papers arriving on doorsteps from 22 February.

UCU launches reballot as it confirms strikes to go ahead this week

Vice-chancellors are urged to 'come out of hiding' and use the sector's 'vast wealth' to resolve disputes while UCU continues in talks with their representatives via Acas

It's been an exhausting couple of weeks for all the reasons, but I can't let myself forget that there's crucially important stuff happening today. Great to see my union having gotten the employers to the table finally. SUPPORT ALL THE STRIKERS #ucu #strike #ucurising
If it's right that the UK govt is going to block the Scottish reforms to the Gender Recognition Act, then that's confirmation that they'll go to any length to victimise those already at risk in their desperation to keep some grip on the reins. It's despicable. #genderrecognition #toriesout #transrights
