I am a product manager. Built fintech and computer vision stuff.

I write fiction, play snooker and consume content to avoid having to push myself to create. I also cry about unfinished side projects.

Listen up, Dungeon Masters. I'm going to teach you a DM secret. How to create fantasy names for your campaign in 3 quick steps:

1) mash keyboard.

2) group.
[yoyc] [chkcu] [subo] [hzrzi] [vjvutx] [vinif] [tdy] [ibzr] [kbu]

3) add vowels and punctuation.

Tudy
Ib'zur
Kabu

The most refreshing part of being on mastodon is how there's very little grifter and influencer content that's rendered the big platforms unusable
I'm not trying threads. Never joined insta. The sheer addictiveness of watching reels with my wife in her phone is scary enough.
Threads really will overtake everything else in activity pub extremely quickly. Needs to be seen how the retention will look like

I never understood why posts and replies aren't segregated from boosts/retweets in the personal timeline.
Hyperion is glorious. SUCH a good book, and the next in the series is fantastic as well. Three and four a little less so
I agree with all the recommendations so far (Banks, Tchaikovsky, etc.) but would like to add Hannu Rajaniemi, namely the trilogy beginning with “The Quantum Thief”, which blew my mind.
@sciencefiction I love Jeff Vandermeer, China Mieville, Neal Stephenson, Delaney and Wolfe. Would love some recs from the last 10 years or so (I've only read expanse + cixin liu recently).

I'm interested to know why some movies nowadays seem to have this peculiar set of self defeating "features"

1. Too dark. Literally, not thematically. If the audience can't see what's happening, they'll assume something great is happening?

2. You can't hear dialogue. But the explosions? Fuck your eardrums.

I've noticed this across multiple theatres.

Oppenheimer fills me with dread.
