After a lifetime using computers without ever getting a virus, I was infected with malware today - Lemmy.World

So I’ve been using computers ever since I learned how to move my hands. There are pictures of me, as a baby, in front of a CRT monitor using my grandma’s computer. Like many of my generation, I’ve done everything - from sharing MIDI files of the Star Wars theme song over ICQ to downloading incredible amounts of pirated content over LimeWire to modifying MSN Messenger to mess with my friends, to (shamefully) cheating on Grand Chase to (failing) to multiply my RuneScape gold. I’ve installed Russian versions of Windows XP with crazy black and cyan themes and weird screensavers. I’ve cracked Adobe programs with a random file I’ve found somewhere. I’ve ran my Windows 10 system with Windows Defender disabled, no UAC, no firewall and no updates for half a decade. And yet, today, on Windows 11 with all the security features enabled (including the whole virtualization layer) I’ve caught my first malware. And it’s totally my fault: I’ve fell for the “Hey long term commercial partner, here’s an invoice for our latest negotiation, I’ve zipped it and the password is xxxxx” and that was about it. As soon as my brain realized what I had just opened, it was too late - even though I immediately disconnected my computer from the internet, the program took my session cookies and all my online accounts immediately started getting hammered with login attempts and several successful ones. So I’ve just wasted an entire day resetting every single password, revoking all logins, deleting credit card information and changing 2FA - for over 120 online accounts. So yeah, don’t me like me, don’t get too confident - even if you’re familiar with the scam, it can happen to you in a moment of distraction. Also, Windows Defender’s “behavior analysis” is incredibly dumb and won’t save you. This being Lemmy, let me also make something clear: I use Linux for most tasks, but for work-related reasons I need Windows software so I have a Windows partition that is also synced to my browser (with all the passwords and etc).

Anime with mental games/traps like Liar Game or Death Note - Lemmy.World

Hey folks, I’m not sure why but I’m suddenly in the mood for exaggerated mental disputes, the kind of “hah, you’ve fallen for my trap, as I’ve predicted your moves 24 steps ago” and “oh, but actually, I knew that and YOU have fallen for my trap” dispute. It can be cheesy or over the top, like in Death Note, or more serious and actually plausible, like on Liar Game, I’m just craving more of that. Thanks!

In 2024, Pop!_OS is currently the only way to revive a MacBook Air 2015 - Lemmy.World

I have an used, beat up MacBook Air 2015 - and I can’t afford a new laptop for a long while. My situation is a bit messy and sad at the moment. I can’t use MacOS on it, because the battery was replaced by a third party and MacOS freaks out about it and locks the CPU to 400 MHz. I can’t use Windows on it, because the Intel HD Graphics drivers are no longer maintained and all versions compatible with Windows 10 and Windows 11 have a regression that disables the internal display - there’s nothing you can do about it, they only run on external monitors. And there’s an unknown bug on the Linux open source MESA drivers that, on the HD Graphics 6000, also causes a black screen unless you use nomodeset, which is terrible for battery life and performance. I tried the latest Ubuntu, Ubuntu LTS, Linux Mint, Fedora, Bazzite, Arch, Endeavour and Opensuse Tumbleweed - every single distro was affected. Except Pop!_OS. Maybe someone with more Linux knowledge could isolate what they’re doing different than everybody else, but man am I’m glad I decided to test this last .iso as a last ditch effort. Also, thank fuck for open source operating systems, otherwise this device would literally be shiny electronic waste thanks to Apple’s proprietary battery bullshit.

AMD must fix FSR upscaling (DLSS vs FSR comparison) - Lemmy.World

I’m already expecting the downvotes, but I’ll keep saying this: it’s not acceptable for AMD to sell you a full priced card, in 2024, that doesn’t have hardware acceleration for better upscaling, instead relying on leftover shader compute. Intel XeSS and DLSS are years ahead. And in this age of TAA being pretty much mandatory on deferred renderers, you can’t even hide behind the “we don’t need upscaling!” false argument.

Jagex co-founder and ex-employee (Andrew Gower) announces new MMORPG inspired by RuneScape - Lemmy.World

I mean, when I saw an ex-Jagex employee making a new MMO I thought it was going to be slightly inspired by RuneScape… But this game looks exactly like RuneScape 3

Helldivers 2 no longer working? - Lemmy.World

After an initial period of not running on the Deck, the Proton Hotfix branch allowed the game to be playable - we even had an influx of people showing their macros and settings for the Deck. However, today, mine is only showing a black screen. GE-Proton, Proton 9, Proton Hotfix - it doesn’t matter, just a black screen. If I spam “A” I sometimes get an anti-cheat error. Anybody else having issues? It’s not the servers being down, as I can play normally on my PC.

Old-School RuneScape is getting an official HD update + native plugin support - Lemmy.World

OS:RS is updating it’s official client with a toggeable HD mode that blends the old school low poly models with modern rasterized global illumination, updated texture filtering and high resolution rendering. Additionally, the new engine together with the client update will be more easily customizable and modifiable by plugins, making the official client closer to the community favorite RuneLite client.

Games that force you to make hard choices

Games that force you to make hard choices - Lemmy.World

Hey all! I’d like to request recommendations (spoiler free!) for games where you need to make choices, take sides, kill or not kill someone, follow or do not follow orders, but where the consequences actually matter - and most importantly, where the choices aren’t “obviously good choice vs obviously bad choice”. Give me games where I can choose to side with one kingdom or another, but there’s no clear moral high ground, or where I need to decide to save someone dear to me at the cost of innocent lives. I do not want things like “save all the children and get the happy ending and make flowers grow” versus “kill everybody and everything blows up and the world gets all its water replaced by acid”. What games fit this requirement?

Medieval dark fantasy games?

Medieval dark fantasy games? - Lemmy.World

Hey folks, I know game requests can get pretty annoying - but please help a brother out. I’m in a very specific mood, and I want to play an action RPG in a dark fantasy setting - the issue is, people got bored of all fantasy being medieval, so now games always come up with a twist “dark fantasy… But in the 40’s! But it’s cyberpunk! But it’s actually under the ocean!” and while I respect these subgenres… Just give me a knight in armour and a gritty story, pleeeeease. By action RPG, I don’t even mean Diablo clone. It can be one, but also a 2D open world RPG, or a 3D old-school Skyrim-like, or a MMORPG style, or whatever. I just need one.
