About the Opportunity Summary The Department of Art + Design in the College of Arts, Media and Design invites applications for a Research and Teaching Fellow role to expand the vibrant teaching and design-research initiatives of the College of Arts, Media and Design (CAMD). We seek candidates who will advance design research by presenting and exhibiting their research findings and leading classes focused in the Fellow’s specific area of design, games, animation, research, professional practice, and/or analysis of the built environment. Fellows will have the opportunity to engage and collaborate with all faculty of the Department of Art + Design and across the College of Arts, Media and Design (Architecture, Music, Journalism, Communications, Theater), with CAMD’s Center for Design, and with faculty across the University. We seek candidates whose research, creative and professional works will help enhance CAMD’s strategic initiatives in the areas of urban design for social innovation, data visualization, game design, 2D and 3D animation, and extended reality. Responsibilities This position is a one-year fellowship for emerging design practitioners and researchers. The role will entail leading three courses in total over the course of the academic year. One of these courses may be a year-long graduate studio centered on the Fellow’s research focus. Another course may be either a core studio or seminar course, wherein the Fellow’s unique focus could be brought to bear on s the core curriculum. The Fellow will be invited to deliver a lecture as part of the annual lecture series in the School of Architecture and/or Department of Art + Design and/or prepare an exhibition of design research with an additional stipend to support the exhibition installation. Qualifications Candidates must have a terminal degree in the proposed focus areas of the candidate’s research and anticipated teaching area (typically PhD's for Architectural and Landscape Architecture historians and Art historians, and Masters degrees for design, professional practice, and building technology faculty). Additional Information Candidates are required to submit a CV, cover letter, portfolio of creative works and design research, and a one-page (maximum) project proposal for a year-long research project, including an outline for a year-long Masters Research/Design studio. In addition, candidates should provide names and contact information for three references. Letters of reference may be solicited at a later date. JOB DESCRIPTION Interactive Media and Game Development (IMGD) at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is a vibrant, growing, multidisciplinary program focused on education, creative practice, and research at the intersection of art, design, technology, and play. The program seeks a new colleague who will support and grow the curriculum in their area of interest and expertise. Applicants in all areas of IMGD—including but by no means limited to user experience design, emerging creative technologies, audio, and/or interactive media and game programming—are welcome to apply and will be given equal consideration. The successful candidate will teach existing undergraduate and graduate courses in the curriculum, with an expected teaching load of 5 courses per year. The candidate will also have the opportunity to develop new courses and curricular initiatives in topics related to their expertise. WPI’s academic calendar operates on four 7-week terms per year at the undergraduate level, meaning teaching-track faculty typically teach 1 or 2 courses at a time. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will also be expected to advise undergraduate students in their project work. WPI’s project-based learning system requires undergraduate students to complete intensive projects in their junior and senior year. The junior year project focuses on the intersection of technology and society; the senior year project is conducted within the team’s major(s).
