I do weird and wacky things with data, sound, and multi-sensory experiences. I also run a lot :)

Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Whitman College.

Earned PhD in Information Science from CU Boulder. Former data journalist covering energy issues, so obviously my favorite board game is Power Grid.

Welcome to the Sonification Awards 2024! Fill out this form if you'd like to contribute to the awards this year as a judge. A few quick rules: - You must have created and published at least one sonification - You must be willing to put in the time necessary to review a collection of sonifications in January and February 2025. - You must not judge work that you contributed to in any way. If you don't follow those rules, we reserve the right to exclude your application. See the data sonification awards website at http://sonificationawards.org for details on the different categories. If you have any questions, then drop us a line at [email protected]

The Open Sonification Awards are live! πŸ‘‚ πŸ… πŸ₯‚ https://www.sonificationawards.org/

It's different from other awards in that it's not competitive--more like a Michelin star than an Oscar. Any sonification released in the last two years is eligible. The deadline for submissions is 12/31.

I had the pleasure of being the chair of the Communications category, which meant convening journalists & science educators to gather their input on what makes an excellent sonification. Reach out to me if you have questions!

Next week three Wirfs-Brocks will be presenting our co-authored Onward! essay, "Discovering Your Software Umwelt" at SPLASH.

In the essay we use ourselves as guinea pigs to explore the concept of a software developer umwelt and how it is formed, shaped and tuned over time.

The process of making that past project was super cathartic, and helped me gain balance and perspective at a time when I was feeling stressed and overworked. Feeling that now as well, so maybe I need some autobiographical #dataviz/data #sonification as self care!
Building off the autobiographical data #sonification I did of my writing/productivity habits when writing my dissertation proposal I made a few years back (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzN4lPSGURI), I have a new idea: how many Google Drive files do I open a day, and what might that tell me about my work/life patterns? I think on most weekdays it might be... dozens? Oof!

Also, I'm strongly leaning toward using a zyBooks, https://www.zybooks.com/, (on recommendations of several colleagues) as our main practical textbook, which I've never used before -- any thoughts for/against?
