De l’Antiquité au XVIe siècle, de l’Egypte à l’Angleterre, les femmes sont responsables de la production de bière pour leurs familles. C’est une tache essentielle alors que l’eau est de mauvaise qualité et véhicule des maladies. Elle est aussi importante que le fait de préparer la nourriture. Lorsqu’il y avait du surplus, les femmes pouvaient le vendre.
Mais l’expansion de l’usage de la bière observé à la fin du Moyen Age
