Day one of Melbourne’s contactless "tap and go" rollout:

- Lines: Craigieburn, Upfield, Seymour, Ballarat
- Total taps: 5,159

Anecdotally I've not seen or heard any real issues. Personally, my billing data for both physical card and Apple Pay tallied the correct figures, including free 'change of mind'.

Still to come:

- Readers for V/Line conductors and AOs need updating
- Presumably: wait at least a month to determine that billing all looks correct, with no major anomalies.

It's something that most people don't consider - and shouldn't have to, really. How does a new currency symbol end up supported by every computer and phone in the world?

The process to ensure our text communications interchange consistently now and for decades (and centuries?) to come isn't taken lightly by anyone at Unicode.

And the fact that it is so human-dependant, is what also makes it interesting. https://blog.unicode.org/2026/02/from-central-bank-to-code-point-roadmap.html

Contactless Adoption Timeline – Express Transit

How many cities support contactless on their metros around the world. Timeline for when each city transit system supported contactless, and which cities are to support contactless soon.

No expansion to contactless zone planned for 2026. Next stage of rollout only for 'the rest of the rail network that uses myki':

"Once the trials are successfully completed, tap and go payments will be switched on across the rest of the rail network that uses myki before being rolled out on buses and trams."

Regarding concession fares, confirmed to still be considered in scope – just not in this first public round:

"People travelling on concession fares must keep using myki but will have the opportunity to participate in later stages of the rollout."
