@baclace I think chat (as an interface for search) could be an exciting innovation, but it's not there yet with the current LLMs. Anecdotally people seem to like that chat can give search results + summarization of those results.

@baclace I took a look at comparisons between ChatGPT and Canvas (the learning management software), and the trends are near identical -- which makes me think that ChatGPT is being used more by students than professionals.

Wikipedia is probably just universally interesting, even when you're not working or in school.

@baclace There's also a large weekend "reserve" interest. It would be fascinating to see who uses ChatGPT for: (1) work-related procedural knowledge ("how to generate regression plot"); (2) work-related automation ("write an email requesting a meeting"); (3) knowledge; (4) entertainment/creativity; (5) ???
@baclace the point is that people search for chatgpt during the work week, but they search for wikipedia all the time— which might imply that it’s used more as a productivity tool than a knowledge source.

Three searches with similar volume. Do you think this reveals anything about how people use ChatGPT?

I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.
@lowd @Riedl @pfau @jacobeisenstein Also I think the app options might also be different from the web client ones. I saw this guide: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/user/posting/#privacy
Posting to your profile - Mastodon documentation

Sharing your thoughts has never been more convenient.

@jacobeisenstein @Riedl @pfau Boosting, always. Commenting, it would depend on the visibility setting of the reply. For instance, these replies are "unlisted" so they're visible to all, but won't show up in feeds/search (I think)
@jacobeisenstein @Riedl @pfau I don't use it much -- I meant the recommendation algorithm / feed, not the trending tab.
@Riedl @jacobeisenstein @pfau since posts can’t really trend here, mastodon also incentivizes more discussion in the #PaperThread vs 🦤 if you want to keep it discoverable in #feeds
