I am a father, a cognitive scientist, a professor, a computational modeler (who won't touch "deep nets" or their ilk with a 10-foot pole), an atheist, a humanist, a democratic socialist, and a curmudgeon, albeit a pretty nice one.

So here’s a thing I have mixed feelings about: A photo of my lab group ca. 2012ish.

I didn’t stage this, and I certainly didn’t put myself in the center of it. But here it is.

I *think* the original idea came from the woman in the white sweater and red shirt. It was her boyfriend who took the photo.

Thanks to @evawolfangel for the original post.

What do folks who think GPT is “intelligent” think about this.

Is this intelligent, or is GPT simply reflecting the statistics of its training?

Does GPT understand what it’s saying?

If so, then what would you say back to it? And would your words make any difference? (Hint: No.) How intelligent is that?

If not, then in what sense is it “intelligent”?

Ball’s in y’all’s court.

It’s good that Brittney Griner is home, but the price was extremely high. Sending civilians to Russia for anything as trivial as a sporting event is inviting kidnapping and extortion – a fact that is glaringly obvious now, but was only slightly less obvious when she went there. One is led to wonder about the calculus that led someone to decide sending a basketball team to Russia was a good idea. Someone profited from this, but the cost to the world as a whole could be very high.

The fossil fuel industry is planning to funnel another $1.5 million into the Georgia run-off election in support of Herschel Walker.

Georgia, if you haven’t voted, make sure you do so ASAP.

Vote Warnock.
