So I'm a bit too old to have my social media regulated by grown ups, and one of them is literally smoke and grit anyway, so I think I'm going to have to use the "digital wellbeing", a ridiculous name, feature on my phone to ban myself from Instagram between 9am and 8pm. Unlike the Facebook shorts algorithm or YouTube, on Instagram not all roads lead to CuckSmasher666 talking about salad being effete because of mass migration and how being bummed by Romans isn't gay because of Western Chauvinism.

I guess that's why TikTok is popular, which I have never used and I'm not proud of that - it's simply that my younger relatives used TikTok and I feel like I'm trespassing. My youngest nephew is interested in social media because it's forbidden and I've let him use my Instagram. I think he's going to be very disappointed when he eventually gets his own social media account and finds it's not science, maths, fountain pens, photography, music, history, comedy, food, literature, and linguistics.

The Instagram algorithm is too good. Unlike YouTube and Facebook it doesn't seem to ragebait because it appears to be the intersection of what people you follow or like, liked or shared and as a result I will always find interesting people or things to see or to watch. With user curated social media people, or observables, only produce content at a slower rate and the clever trick is to aggregate content from people you don't follow but are likely to be interested in. A near constant stream.
