BTW I've read that there are practically seperate internets, e. g. in South America, in China, between USA+EU etc. (Frédéric Martel, "Smart", Enquête sur les internets).

Probably even in South (!) Korea there's one distinct set of classical web services available and popular (though they of course have Facebook and in many many countries Microsoft Windows is dominant)

"We have plenty of criticisms. We need solutions."
"The main issue is not knowing ahead of time what's likely to work and what's not."

-> Well, three modes come into my mind: 1. Follow the standards you perceive from others. 2. Actively discuss/co-define the standards globally 3. Define the standards for your sphere (kind of decentralization, in case global coupling ceases).

Firefox is usable anyway (you can configure a lot), though I would immediatly switch back to Opera 12 (probably many sites will work) if only this wouldn't be a security problem.

This considerations hardly include thoghts about environmental sustainability. After pandemic I will talk to people in-person and not sit in front of my computer. So role of browser may decrease.

There are some points that I dislike in Firefox: 1. Makes it hard to access local files (and needs to be tricked to accept symlinks). 2. Developer tools don't show begun request, only finished. 3. Will invoke "/bin/sh downloaded.pdf" if your GNU/X handler is like "/bin/sh xyzpdf-wrap.sh" - this is known wontfix. 4. Taking 1GB of RAM wheras about:performance shows 80 MB. 5. No .mht format which keeps file system clean

They /were/ available on BSD. Despite being closed-source they had a pretty /well-documented/ storage structure (profile). The profile was 1:1 usable on dual-boot machines. They already /had/ a list of websites, but they wouldn't render their links in colors but just modified them on-the-fly to look pretty.

I do believe that one could even legally update it and distribute the modifications. http://jbechtel.de/site/tricks/opera-future

There are so many correct points in this discussion and I would like to add tons of things, but probably the Fediverse doesn't have the right format for collecting, weighting, quashing arguments.

One thing that has worked me over was the abandon of closed-source Opera Presto (Opera 12). Opera Company is also specialized in advertising but anyway made some stunning piece of software. They actively co-defined the web -> rather no separation web <-> tools.

#Wahlcomputer, Nein Danke!

On the other side there are surely boots which cost ninety dollars and break as fast as the ten dollar boots. But this of course only affects people.
