There have been a deeply disappointing number of mastodon account takeovers in the past few weeks used to spam out malicious links in the guise of porn. I’m guessing most or all are abandon accounts, so the owner doesn’t even realize.

Please please please enable two factor authentication on your mastodon accounts regardless of which instance you are on or how sensitive or not you think the stuff you post is.

Scam Alert

If you see someone reply to your own post, and

- asks you to click on a link, scan a QR code, or fill out a form, in order to "keep your account active", "verify security", or do a similar fishy activity
- may say they're from "Mastodon moderation team" or some other official-sounding thing

Please understand that

- a post like that is scam;
- you should NEVER click on that link; and
- a real member of the mod team will never ask you to 'verify your account' by randomly replies.
