FediThing has moved!General Electric developed a lifeboat for spacecraft in the early 1960s called MOOSE, which was basically:
-A plastic bag
-A can of foam
-A tiny rocket motor
-A parachute
-A rubber shield
You had to leave your spacecraft in your spacesuit, climb inside the plastic bag, fill it with foam, point yourself at the Earth and fire the motor π¬
The rubber and foam were supposed to stop you burning to death. We will never know if it would have worked.
