Lastly, and this perhaps applies mostly to people that come in as "senior", the lack of ability to use STAR approach when describing their experiences. It's not so wide spread but, oh boy.
Secondly, it's alarming to see how very few don't get the basics. And I'm not talking about mid-level developers, this is rather spread out. Stuff like data modeling and data flow are mostly non-existing. Am I disillusioned? How are people getting even close to talk about architecture? All I hear is framework boilerplate lingo.
I'm currently hiring for a BE developer (RoR) and here are some thing that I noticed:
First off, I just threw the coding challenge out of the window, replacing it with a system design interview. I find much more important to see how a person reasons than coding on its own. Collaboration is fundamental when it comes to working in a team. Sorry techbros.
Somehow I struggle to reconcile that these two lived at the same time. A blast from the past.
