@lcamtuf as someone who was born and raised in Sarajevo, this one hits home. There is a series of podcasts in The Rest is History that goes through that event. Was interesting to hear it from that POV vs what we were taught in school way back then.

@vivtek @rob @lcamtuf I had the same experience. As a refugee in the early/mid 90s I was in Germany for about 5 years. I learned German as fast as I could, and that effort was greatly appreciated by Germans. Generally speaking, I think one can assimilate to a society/culture without losing their own cultural identity. I never felt that pressure in Germany or here in the US.

@HalvarFlake as some who has lived in AZ for the last 10 years, I can confirm that the water issue comes up often. Interestingly, only last year were there any noticeable changes. Few golf courses shut down, but the last winter we had a ton of snow and the conversation died out. Most of the time it’s a political one though. Some other countries such as Saudi Arabia bought up a bunch of land for growing alpha alpha which is 100% exported. And that crop requires a massive quantity of water. That is a much much bigger flashpoint than landscaping water usage
