and now i'm gonna do something you absolutely aren't allowed to do in the context of the Holocaust unless you're Jewish (and i really mean it) and talk about Israel.
people use Israel as a way to not think about the Holocaust. and that's especially true for the people who are sure they're not the ones doing that.
for some people, using Israel to not think about the Holocaust means supporting Israel as a stand in for supporting Jews. "why, we are not antisemitic, we support Israel! we support a specific group of Jews unconditionally, that must mean we don't actually hate Jews deep inside. and of course, our desire that Jews leave our country and move to Israel has nothing to do with the fact that'll mean less Jews around us.
no, we are definitely not the same as the Germans of the 1930s. absolutely not, here's the proof!"
for other people, using Israel to not think about the Holocaust means finding the single evil to solve to prove they are good. "why, Israel is doing evil, and by being against that it means i can't be doing evil! we oppose a genocide now, that's pretty much the same as stopping the genocide then. there is not a smidge of racism in our body.
no, we are definitely not the same as the Germans of the 1930s. absolutely not, here's the proof!"
and that sort of metal gymnastics is effective. those people don't need to think about the Holocaust anymore, they solved it. they atoned for the crimes of their forefathers, they proved it can't happen again. they do it so they can keep the belief that the Holocaust is a done deal, it's over, it's passé.
you can't solve the Holocaust. nothing you do can solve the Holocaust. because you can't take back a genocide.
