The Social Music Network

@defaultmediatransmitter has proposed to volunteer as a TSMN technical administrator, and after long deliberation and heated discussion (not! ), @Mel and @icaria36 have decided to accept his offer.

Currently our northernmost member in the TSMN map (and honestly, hard to beat), he earns our admin trust for a community trajectory on the Fediverse, self-hosting a bunch of applications including Faircamp, contributing code to Mirlo, and... can you say No to someone building their own Eurorack modules?

defaultmediatransmitter has just been granted the admin role here on Discourse (the software that powers this website), and he has got access to our virtual server, and also management rights of our domain.

We are very excited! The admin team went from one to three people in less than a day. A very good governance foundation for TSMN things to come.

Welcome to the admin team, @defaultmediatransmitter!

Fairness and autonomy for music makers and friends

Ok, thank you for your feedback. Here is an imperfect summary of the discussion so far, focusing on the outreach:

  • We need to host conversations that our core audience of music makers and projects supporting them consider beneficial, useful to them.
  • We need to invite the projects and communities already working on fair music distribution and exchange.
  • We need to build on the existing knowledge of all these actors, which is currently spread and hard to find.
  • We need to promote cross-project collaborations with specific common goals that actually materialize into something useful.
  • We need to offer a space that (aspirational) professional music makers and related project roles feel safer, productive, and rewarding -- not another place where "the community at large" puts pressure on them for support and features.

Even more condensed:

  • focus on high quality discussions for our core audience
  • continue inviting projects relevant for these discussions
  • build a knowledge base capturing what we know and supporting discussions about what we don't know yet.
  • I fully agree with all this, and will prioritize related work on https://the.socialmusic.network/t/betatesting-tsmn/161 accordingly.

At the same time, are you saying... If you build it, they will come? Because so far nobody has mentioned outreach-outreach activities beyond reaching out to friends and to projects in our immediate neighborhood. It's fine! Not complaining, there is enough to do for starters. Just checking that this is what we (collectively) mean.

Who is missing? Who should we invite?

This is a wiki post that most logged in members can edit. Let’s keep it updated together! Do you know social music lovers who should be here? Please list them below (just paste the link to their public website / social profile; no personal info or description). Optionally, you can add a comment mentioning your update and explaining why you think this place would be better with them (yes, an opportunity to praise them). 🙂 Let’s move those who already landed here to the list at th...

@Mel quickly responded to our call for technical administrators on https://the.socialmusic.network/t/governance-moderators-and-administrators-welcome/28.

As the sole admin (until now!) I had a quick meeting with myself and we immediately accepted her proposal.

I can't remember when I met Mel but it was on Mastodon about a yer and a half or more. For me, Mel it's the epitome of the music maker that...

    • believes in the artists’ autonomy, agency, and control over direct connections with their audiences
    • supports projects that put the artists’ work at the center in non-exploitative and ethical ways
    • in particular, discusses the artists’ right to be fairly compensated for their work in order to live a decent life

(You might start to recognizing these words from https://the.socialmusic.network/t/join-the-social-music-network/5)

Mel has just been granted the admin role here on Discourse (the software that powers this website), and she is in the process of getting root access to our virtual server, and also management rights for our domain.

I'm very excited about these news! And relieved. And you should, too.

Welcome to the admin team, @Mel!

    Governance: moderators and administrators welcome

Call for technical administrators The problem is easy to understand: We need to have more than one person with access to the virtual server (Ubuntu Server LTS on Hetzner) and the domain (Gandi). Otherwise, if something happens to @icaria36 it will take a lot of work to replicate this website by hand. It would be very useful to have more than one person with administrator permissions on this Discourse. If we have more people with root access to the server, then they could take over, but… Discou...

    Social Music Network

The Social Music Network has started its outreach in the Fediverse, which is our comfort zone. All good, but most (aspirational) professional music makers and related creators are not here yet. How do we reach out to them?

    • How can we help existing members bring people from their circles?
    • Are there associations or other types of collectives we could invite?
    • How do we approach the corporate platforms where many of these people can be found?
    • Are there other outreach channels we should consider?

Let's discuss our tactics here. For specific recommendations, see https://the.socialmusic.network/t/who-is-missing-who-should-we-invite/59?u=icaria36

Also, very timely, Faircamp is coming to the list of options:

    Just did the first successful test-subscribe to a #faircamp generated podcast rss feed. ⸜(˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝

This episode (and a couple of others) is also available as a video on Peertube for anyone who’d rather not want to touch S**ttify

Yeah, I hesitated before syndicating this feed, but it's the one they offer, and the content is really on-topic here.

For what is worth, Castopod is a great tool for the task, and Funkwhale can be also used as a podcast host.

I actually wonder whether PeerTube can be used as a podcast host for audio files only. I mean, whether it generates an RSS feed that AntennaPod et al can poll as a regular podcast. Does anyone know, has anyone tried?

Other recommendations for fair podcast hosting platforms?
