Second, it’s not surprising that what works in New England might not work in the Gulf. But as we know from the oil and gas industry, success comes from being the first to figure out what works in your specific play. So let the innovation begin!
This article strikes a somewhat pessimistic tone, but let me offer some thoughts. First, electricity might be cheaper overall down here but there are times when we REALLY NEED it - see ERCOT and MISO recently. So wind could be combined with large-scale storage like hydrogen. And you’d qualify for 45V tax credits even under the strictest additionality stipulations! There’s plenty of pore space out there for storage. https://heatmap.news/economy/gulf-mexico-leases-offshore-wind
The Gulf of Mexico Is a Very Hard Spot to Build a Wind Farm

An upcoming lease sale will be historic — but also quite risky for offshore wind.

Here’s Mason preparing his first mud squeezing sample. Really sticky goop from right below the seafloor. Fun times in the Daigle lab. #geology
We set up our first consolidation test with the cores from the Cape Fear Slide. Our precious mud is in the sample chamber waiting to be squeezed. This will tell us compressibility & permeability & help us understand how fluids move around and how submarine landslides occur. #geology

If any of y’all are in Houston and have wrinkly shirts, now’s the time to go hang them outside.
One of my grad students passed away over break. This is so sad for everyone- the family, obviously, but also the grad student community here, my immediate students, and me. Your students are someone’s friends, siblings, children. I was a grad student not long ago. #academic
