Today I want to talk about one of the most famous apes that exists, Kanzi the bonobo. While not as popular as Koko the Gorilla, Kanzi is a key figure in the story of ape language research.
Born on October 28, 1980 (He just celebrated his 42nd birthday a month and a half ago!), At just 5 years old he began work with researchers on ape cognition, specifically if apes could learn language to some capacity.
After a few years, he & his sister Panbanisha were relocated to the Great Ape Trust, where he continued working on language skills with Sue Savage. This is where he was filmed the most, some of the videos are on youtube. He was even on the Oprah Winfrey show in the mid 2000's.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Myl142PvH8&t=1343sSadly, Sue did not treat Kanzi well. He was severely obese when first relocated to where he lives now (The Ape Cognition and Conservation Initiative). On top of this, there were allegations that Sue mistreated Kanzi by hitting him. One claim even said she threw, or left, boiling water around and Kanzi got burned by it.
Now he spends his days in a sanctuary with other Bonobos, still doing some language research, but mostly spending time with other bonobos at a sanctuary. Which still isn't ideal, but he could never be released in the wild again.
There are an estimated 10-20k bonobos left in the wild, and they only live in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They will most likely become extinct in the next few decades at most thanks to multiple factors, including: Bushmeat trade/consumption, war, poverty, slash and burn farming, logging, disease, lack of local awareness.
