Missionaries have been secretly and illegally placing small devices on the lands of isolated indigenous peoples in the Amazon in an attempt to convert them to their faith

The 'In Touch' devices - made by a Baptist group in Atlanta, Georgia USA - play out passages of the Bible. Weatherproof and fitted with solar panel, they run indefinitely.

The devices have been found scattered throughout the Javari region, near Brazil's border with Peru.

"We can, if need be, ransack the whole globe, penetrate into the bowels of the earth, descend to the bottom of the deep, travel to the farthest regions of this world, to acquire wealth, to increase our knowledge, or even only to please our eye and fancy."
William Derham (1657-1735), English clergyman

The devouring, imperialist attitude to our envirnment is an old one.

@thatkatharine What still gets me the most is how even anarchists and others who normally are not uncritical when it comes to doing anything just because the government said so, or at least only adhere to rules that make sense to protect themselves and others, suddenly when it came to COVID became the most "but the government said so".

Additionally hurtful to me because they used to be my friends and the people i thought i could count on in a crisis.

I have never felt so lonely.

@histoftech I just watched that doc yesterday! So good.
@histoftech I watched Jaws for the first time in 2021 and it felt *exceedingly* timely (at least, the first half or so)
