Turns out being a courtroom transcriptionist is basically like finding a new favourite show every day but only getting to watch every fourth or fifth episode, and usually missing out on the season finale.

i've applied for 80+ developer jobs this year, Seek tells me over 200 other people were applying for each, and i have had 5 interviews, which were apparently all "near misses"

then i applied for a couple of jobs as a legal/courtroom transcriptionist, and got the first one!

(100+ wpm and outstanding spelling & grammar are finally paying off!)
