one thing I always feel that's missing in these stories is trauma. I thought Vandermeer's Borne handled the concept in a way I've never seen, but trauma is more conflated with motivation here e.g. Kirishima and The Crimson Riot

The character notes at the end of each chapter are great too, falling for the author as much as the work.
