the dystopian-future death-arena forum-based strategy-rpg my wife plays an evil corporate sponsor in is running again, so I've dug up the logo I did for her (and in the process of getting a new .png cut from the original files, did a new version in case she feels like changing up styles for a laugh)

alright

musicians, especially keyboardists/synthesists, i want yr advice

i've been looking at getting into synths in a minor way for a while now

but i am old. i am saying this upfront because whenever i try to set the boundaries on what i want advice ON, people immediately ignore it

what I want is a keyboard or a synth head unit (i've got a midi controller i'll plug into it) that I can very easily just leave up behind my desk here so that when my brain is full of fuck, i can just turn around in my desk chair and slap my hands on the keys and make some vwoo-type synth noises, big enya chords and cheesy late-80s adult contemporary noises

i do

-->NOT<---

want VSTs, DAWs or anything where I'd have to be using my computer or a phone or a laptop (i don't have a laptop) or a tablet (ditto)

i want HARDWARE. i understand knobs, buttons, and plugging things into each other. i do not understand computers. also, it's gotta have a keyboard or be able to be controlled by a keyboard. also i'm not euroracking any time soon, i don't have the money, the space, or the time.

i had a behringer model d for a while, and while that was cool, i didn't have the time to teach myself the whole process of actually running a minimoog (also I was running it into my guitar amp, which i think had bad frequency cutoffs for what the keyboard was actually trying to output, so it didn't sound as nice as i wanted) so in the end it was a lot more bother than the actual act of producing space sounds could counterbalance.

so i took it back to the store, regretfully - maybe i'll do something like that again when i move out of this apartment and have more studio space

but in the meantime, i'm feeling like i want less knob-twiddling and more pure moods

but what hardware? what should i be getting? i don't mind getting something a bit lower-end for simplicity's sake, but i don't want to go full on rinkadink casiotone, either. fuck that, i've spent more than a paycheck on a guitar before. i can do better.

talk to me. i'm considering a roland (if not a d-05 itself for those sweet, sweet enya sounds, then maybe one of the zen-engine pieces they do these days to install those sounds on later) but i'm willing to hear opinions.

I'm practically salivating to bring back 100-year-old slang

i love outdated slang and vocab, and the more torturous I can make the adaptation to the modern tongue, the happier i am

so i've read this (brief) 1926 text on the topic several times now and yet I know for a fact that there's almost no place in modern life to integrate almost any of it into my speech or writing. sadness.
