All my phones so far worked in very light rain to some extent. A single drop of water won’t make it unusable.

The IP rating isn’t meant for making the device usable in all conditions. It was meant for the device to survive those conditions.

Yes, absolutely. When my phone gets drenched in the rain on a cycling trip, I want it to survive.

Ah damnit, you’re right. I took a closer look, and indeed a smartphone app is mandatory, with Play Services enabled on Android. So N26 is off the table.

For completeness, see:

Thank you for your advice. I haven’t heard of the Aurora Store, but I know there’s something similar to that for /e/OS (maybe it’s actually Aurora Store itself?) Sure, the source is the Play store, but I’m worried that the banking apps wouldn’t run if the phone is rooted and/or there are no proper Google services. And even if they happen to be working, are they still gonna work in a year? I need a future-proof solution.

As for Chinese phones - well, I don’t trust them. And out of them, Huawei would be the least trustworthy, which is known to be a spying company. My problem in the first place isn’t that it’s Google who’s intruding my privacy. My problem is that someone is intruding my privacy.

Besides that, while I know some Chinese phones are actually working pretty well, I once bought a very expensive flagship Xiaomi, and it broke within less than a year. Even while I used it, it was lagging a tiny little bit. Sometimes. Then I got my Pixel 6a, a mid-range phone for half as much money, and I’m pretty impressed with the hardware, it’s butter smooth. But alas the battery is now a fire hazard.

Ironically, I’ll have to get my Xiaomi fixed and revert to that one until I get a trustworthy phone. I’m planning to get a Fairphone with /e/OS on the long term.

App alternatives for Europe AND South-East Asia - Lemmy.World

Given the recent news [https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/08/google-will-block-sideloading-of-unverified-android-apps-starting-next-year/] about Google’s hardening of sideloaded apps, I need to speed up my efforts to get rid of Google services. However, there are a few apps/infrastructures that I’m really struggling to find a replacement for, because I happen to be in a long distance relationship with my girlfriend and I often travel to South-East Asia. Banking Maybe the easier part is the banking: currently I use ING, Revolut and Wise. - ING is my main account that I trust. Employers in Germany sometimes require a German bank account, it’s not enough to simply have a German IBAN. For this, I’ve been thinking of N26. It seems like they have a full-featured web interface, so the app is probably not mandatory. Does anyone have any experience with them? - Revolut’s web interface is not complete, so I cannot use it in the future. - Wise does have a full-featured web interface, but I still need to experiment whether I can actually transfer many to Asian bank accounts. “Asian infrastructure” Now this is the real headache. In South-East Asian countries, people only know WhatsApp. It’s considered as a must-have. If anyone wants to contact you, it’s either WhatsApp or it’s not happening. And the other thing is Grab for an Uber-like service plus for food delivery, as well as groceries. Since in many of these countries it’s simply not an option to walk, this is an important app. I’d be interested in some insights from locals, how do they manage to live there without Grab and WhatsApp. Thanks in advance!

That was my first thought as well. As he’s touching into these sort of topics, where he has to defend himself against companies with the greatest capital in the world, he won’t stand a chance to survive on these traditional platforms. He definitely needs to launch a PeerTube instance.

But the thing is, with this size of a channel, it would cost a lot of money to maintain it.

I don’t think it’s clickbait at all. He’s in real danger of being silenced. With this latest project he reached into a massive wasp nest for sure, but I admire his efforts to speak up in cases like this.

And I haven’t found any bias in his content in general. He’s pretty transparent about his methodologies.

I don’t know in which country it works like that.

I only have an insight in Hungary’s elections. There, from time to time there is a genuinely good candidate, while most of them are garbage. E.g. during the last election, the main opposition figure was one who never had any scandal on his tab before, and he was actually coming from the labor market - he actually did have an insight into reality, unlike the rest of our politicians who have never done any real work before, they were just politicians all their lives.

Guess whom the country voted for. They voted for this far-right mafia regime, and the outcome was the greatest majority that they have ever achieved.

And the reason for this has two components:

  • Education. Education in that shithole country was never great - far from it. But when this mafia regime was elected in 2010, they deliberately started to dismantle it. And at the same time they have been pushing their stupid propaganda on full blast through all the channels they have plus what they acquired. And people are crazy stupid. They believe the propaganda. They lack the ability to think even just one step ahead. They fail to detect the bullshit in the propaganda, and that’s really a very low bar.
  • Being a moron. Throughout these many years, the regime has acquired a considerable number of companies - and masses of employees with it. From there it’s simple: any one of them, who doesn’t vote for these shitheads, loses their job. And for these fools, their shitty job is worth more than the long term improvement of their and everyone else’s lives.
  • Because of these two factors, the sole candidate in so many years, the one who finally showed a pure track record while having a very reasonable agenda, collected the least amount of votes.

This had nothing to do with authenticity or cynicism.

One thing that’s fishy about Proton is, the way how they’re turning away from the Fediverse when it comes to social media presence. It’s one thing when a company hasn’t discovered Mastodon yet. But Proton did have a Mastodon account, and they decided to abandon it. Not standing with the most prominent human-friendly (and in my opinion, most decent of all) platform and siding with the traditional, proven to be exploitative corporate platforms is something I cannot stomach.

The other thing is, I’m looking at my possibilities to replace Android with /e/OS in my degoogling efforts. And Tuta does publish their apps on F-Droid, which is a major advantage.
