Why does Mint not auto update major versions? - Lemmy.World
I’ve been wondering why Mint doesn’t seem to have an automatic major version
upgrade built in? For those that have an opinion, do you agree with not having
this? Why/why not? I’ve been running Mint 21 for over a year now. I started
using it not long before Mint 22 came out and have been dragging my feet on
upgrading in fear of breaking something and having to reinstall (and losing
something in the process). I’m in the process of setting up proper backups so
I’ll probably do it after those are set up (or maybe wait until Mint 23).

I am working on setting up a home server but I want it to be reproducible if I
need to make large changes, switch out hardware, or restore from a failure. What
do you use to handle this?
Fun/interesting things to self host?

Fun/interesting things to self host? - Lemmy.World
What things do you self host (or know about) that are fun/interesting/useful to
you? I’m thinking of setting up a home server and am looking for things that
would be useful or fun for me to run on it. I want to host things that are
useful/fun, but not a project itself (I’ve got enough projects), if that makes
sense. Most of the lists I see online are mostly lists of technical projects
like docker, kubernetes, grafana, nginx, etc. I see these as infrastructure
rather than the interesting project itself. Examples of the type of service I’m
looking at: a media server, photos app (to replace Google Photos), game servers,
recipe management, home automation… What other things do you know about that are
fun/interesting/useful?
Error when loading Ubuntu live USB

Error when loading Ubuntu live USB - Lemmy.World
I’ve been trying to boot a Ubuntu 24.04 USB (please no discussion of distro
choice) but I keep getting a very unhelpful error during the initial startup.
I’ve tried using a different USB drive, a different USB port, booting from UEFI.
The only thing that has made a change was booting into safe graphics mode. It
got to the install wizard but when I got to the end of the wizard it gave me
other seemingly useless error messages. I’m concerned there’s an issue with my
motherboard but I don’t have strong evidence to support this idea. I recently
took a trip where the computer was fine before I left. I turned it off while I
was away and when I came back my main drive no longer worked. I couldn’t boot
from it or even see the drive in gparted. I’ve replaced the drive without issue
though. If my motherboard is somehow going bad, it’s being very subtle about it.
I was ready to blame Nvidia but when I got it into safe graphics mode, it didn’t
get to the point of having Nvidia drivers. Does anyone have any idea what might
be going on or any way I can get additional information about the errors I’m
getting? The lack of information is really frustrating.
