Giulio Valentino Dalla Riva (he/him)

I work as a Senior Lecturer in Data Science at the University of Canterbury, in New Zealand.

I care about many things: Ethics in Data Science, complex #networks, #evolution and #ecology, Social Networks, ... I use #mathematics and #statistical modelling to study those things. I code, mostly in #julialang.

I ♥️ #mountains, #scifi, #poetry, and #handball.

I'm considering to move to #hachyderm just so I can use the Julia emoji 🤣 is it open to academics in Data Science?

I started working on a #julialang package to work with Random Dot Product Graphs (#RDPG). It's still in its infancy, as I'm moving a lot of my script code into it. Anybody keen to help out will find it here. https://github.com/gvdr/DotProductGraphs.jl

More photographs from demonstrations against fascism today in São Paulo and Belo Horizonte, #Brazil.

Solidarity with everyone on the streets against Bolsonaro, especially those who do not think that the solution is to cede all agency and legitimacy to the institutions of the state.

"We need to foment popular revolt that includes all the disenfranchised sectors of society, everyone who is targeted by fascists, everyone who suffers under capitalism even when it is managed by a progressive government. We must not delegitimize insurrection when the state apparatus is in the hands of the center-left while the streets are in the hands of fascists and security forces. We must find ways to resist, rejecting the blackmail of those who claim that the most important thing is to maintain order, with their eternal moralism in defense of private property and state power."

@rogerswrites @caparsons I'm not defending the paper (I haven't found the time to read it carefully yet). And criticism is always welcome in science/ Just claiming it is "bogus" because we don't agree with its conclusions (that are more narrow than "Russian didn't do anything bad") it's not great. And, oh boy, there's already enough hype in disinformation reporting that we really need careful assessment of the evidences.
@Grant_M @caparsons no, it says "little" and it limits itself to Twitter (not all Russian propaganda). It's a scientific paper, it has a methodology, that can be criticized and even rejected. But not based on platitudes.

@Grant_M @caparsons Ah, well, and do you mind if I ask what exactly in the methodology/data collection is bogus?

(or is it a "bogus = doesn't get to the conclusions I wanted" case?)

@Grant_M @caparsons "that bogus report" meaning the paper in Nature Communication?
@Grant_M @caparsons Russian interference in foreign democracies is orrible and should be stopped. At the same time, I'm extremely skeptical of the actual efficiency of "target advertisment" and would like to see more quantitative evidence of its impact.

@Grant_M @caparsons cool, I'll dive into it shortly. There a discussion going on here: https://mstdn.social/@gavinwilde/109659309408140459

It's hard to provide quantitative evidences here. The evidence for a big impact are also quite lacking.

The mismatch between the theoretical vs actual efficacy of social media influence ops remains wide. The 2016 Russian op preached mostly to a small group of the already converted 👇 https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-022-35576-9
