I finally figured out borders in sizers along with icon buttons. This look a lot better now!
Note: the refresh button has a help icon now. This is temporarily until I can figure out if wxWidgets provides a refresh icon somewhere.
(Oh, and yes, the status bar is a dummy status bar. Maybe I'll get rid of it, I don't know).

UPDATE: This was apparently done in an attempt to smear someone. I personally suspect this was a bot too.
We just received an interesting issue over at @tenacity that has since been deleted. (I just woke up and I only have an email).
TL;DR: An industry-leading professional says our codebase sucks (it does; we know) but also want to charge us $50/hr for their help.

@tenacity I mean, is this real? I guess this is them, and...I honestly don't know what to think. I don't know much about Michael, but if he's an industry-leading expert, then I'm quite disappointed by their behavior here. And I don't mean about the codebase.
On their site, it seems that they've been targeted in a defamation attack, so is this a part of it? I'll give the benefit of the doubt here, but if this is real, then...I don't know what to think.
