Canadian farmers are notorious for using TFW as free labour, often underpaying, overworking, and threatening TFW’s with deportation or other punishments while reaping huge profits and refusing to hire local workers.

Everything our government does Lib or Con has the goal of extracting value for wealthy interests. People need to start paying attention and voting as progressively as possible.

We are leaving so much quality of life on the table (higher wages, holidays, benefits) by not holding our government accountable for anything, and somehow think not paying attention to boring politics is the answer.

>On January 21, 1970, Leary received a ten-year sentence for his 1968 offense, with a further ten added later while in custody for a prior arrest in 1965, for a total of 20 years to be served consecutively. On his arrival in prison, he was given psychological tests used to assign inmates to appropriate work details. Having designed some of these tests himself (including the “Leary Interpersonal Behavior Inventory”), Leary answered them in such a way that he seemed to be a very conforming, conventional person with a great interest in forestry and gardening.[108] As a result, he was assigned to work as a gardener in a lower-security prison from which he escaped in September 1970, saying that his nonviolent escape was a humorous prank and leaving a challenging note for the authorities to find after he was gone

New idea I'm gonna try out

One thing I really liked reddit for was reading news and talking about it. I have stopped posting or commenting there now and am in the process of slowly wiping my posting history... but I still browse it for current events a decent bit as it's just a lot more active than over here.... #kbinMeta

As it says in the title, the BBC is starting its own Mastodon instance [https://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/blog/2023-07-mastodon-distributed-decentralised-fediverse-activitypub]. I think the CBC (and other news networks) should do similar. Particularly with the recent passing of Bill C-18 it seems like a world where the links we share are crossposts to news organization’s own content is the perfect resolution to that whole issue.

Musk threatens to sue researchers who documented the rise in hateful tweets

A nonprofit organization that researches links between social media, hate and extremism has been threatened with a lawsuit by X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. An attorney for the platform recently wrote to the Center for Countering Digital Hate accusing the group of trying to hurt the site's advertising. The center has published numerous research reports documenting an increase in hate speech on the platform since it was purchased last year by Elon Musk. The center says Musk is trying to silence his critics, despite his claims to support free speech.
