Witches and Warlocks Are Real, Apparently... - Lemmy.World

Today I stopped to grab replacement frames for my daughter’s glasses. The lady asked about my daughter’s name (Hermione). Me: Like the girl from Harry Potter. Clerk: Oh I’ve never seen those movies, I don’t believe in the witches and warlocks and such. Me, jokingly: Well it’s all make believe, nobody actually thinks that witches or warlocks are real. She then informed me that they are indeed real and she’s a member of a missionary group who “casts them out” all the time… This is a fully grown (looked to be 45-50ish) adult woman, who is allowed to vote and reproduce, who straight up believes that magic, witches and warlocks are real, and not only that, she is a member of a larger organization of people who go out on “missions” to “cast out” these evildoers. And she works in a business where she holds at least some authority over an aspect of peoples’ health and well being. The crazier thing is, she’s not the first person in this area I’ve met who thinks witches and warlocks are real life people out there casting spells and shit. And that is why Trump won re-election.

TIL You Can Be Silently Shadow Banned on Reddit - Lemmy.World

Basically what the title says. I commented on a post and sent a link to my comment to my wife to get her take on the post and my response. To start, the link just takes her to the topic and not my comment. If she tries to find my comment it isn’t listed. If she manually goes to my profile and tracks down the comment all it says is “[Removed]”. However, from my perspective the comment is still live with 1 view and no activity. I’ve tried closing my browser, refreshing the page and everything and for me the comment is still visible even on the page for the post. For everybody else though it has been removed. The crazy thing is the comment isn’t even controversial; somebody asked for marriage advice and I gave some. The “removal” seems to be automated too because I sent her the link basically as soon as I posted the comment and it was already shadow banned.

Trump’s executive order on voting rights. I may be misinterpreting this (correct me please if I am), but it sure sounds like you won’t be allowed to vote if you didn’t opt for a “RealID” version of your license. A regular driver’s license contains no information regarding citizenship status, at least in my state, so it wouldn’t count. A lot of low income people in rural America have skipped getting a “RealID” because it’s more expensive. If this order goes thru, that decision may cost them their right to vote. This could disenfranchise millions of low income voters.

So I’m re-ripping my DVD copy of MAS*H to re-encode to a new codec, correct some mistakes I made with my original rip, etc. For example, I noticed that, since this was one of the earlier shows I ripped, I completely missed the fact that there’s a second “No laugh track” English audio track that I didn’t rip the first time around. Anyway, these discs have been out in my shed for a number of years now and I have noticed a few of them have started de-laminating in spots. This one in particular, disc 1 of season 4, failed to read once so I pulled it out, cleaned it good and put it back in. It has one large bubble between the layers that isn’t apparent on the label side so I don’t think it’s anything to do with the label getting damp or anything. There’s also a wide band of what appear to be very tiny little micro bubbles in a complete circle around the disc. If it doesn’t get destroyed in the compression, you can see them in the lower portion of the photo. After letting it warm up and cleaning it a bit I tried again and on the second try it slowed down and thrashed around for a few moments when it got to that same section, dropping into kB/s read speeds, but eventually got past it and succeeded in making the ISO. I guess I’m going to have to make space to keep complete ISOs of shows and movies I particularly like, like this one. Man, those Bluray images are ridiculous though.

So today I learned GoG has a “Dream List” where people can vote for and even post their thoughts on games they would like to see on GoG. I voted for Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Spotted with Missing ROPs, Performance Loss Confirmed, Multiple Vendors Affected - Lemmy.World

Seems like so far, as far as anybody knows, only the Zotac “Solid” cards are affected. First paragraph reads: TechPowerUp has discovered that there are NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 graphics cards in retail circulation that come with too few render units, which lowers performance. Zotac’s GeForce RTX 5090 Solid comes with fewer ROPs than it should—168 are enabled, instead of the 176 that are part of the RTX 5090 specifications. This loss of 8 ROPs has a small, but noticeable impact on performance. During recent testing, we noticed our Zotac RTX 5090 Solid sample underperformed slightly, falling behind even the NVIDIA RTX 5090 Founders Edition card. At the time we didn’t pay attention to the ROP count that TechPowerUp GPU-Z was reporting, and instead spent time looking for other reasons, like clocks, power, cooling, etc.

The other day I saw this clip on “Last Week Tonight” and just had to throw this together.

I made a post on Facebook that included the word "hack"...
