DasMorning worked in my hotel, made a trip to meet collaborators briefly, had lunch with them at the cafeteria. One showed me a pic of Jonangu taken yesterday, & on my 18 min train ride back to Sannomiya - looked up Jonangu location (it was in my bookmarks) & saw that it is 90 mins away with a rapid express from Sannomiya. Sped to hotel, dropped computer off, picked up camera and made it to the 2:07. Was at Jonangu at 3:40. Spent an excellent 45mins there! #Kyoto #Japan #Bloomscrolling #DasJP26

awbReceived a scan of an internal Bell Labs memo from 1982 today that showed an alternative Shell for Unix 4.0(!) called CL by Martin Sturzenbecker. It had typed variables and was referenced by David Korn in the 1986 ksh memo. Much thanks to the Bell Labs/Nokia archivists for finding it!
Cees de GrootWell, today is the day. I'm finally "sorta happy enough to pull the trigger" on publishing the book I've been working on for a very long time. It's a technical history book: by a techie, for techies (although I think that between all the code samples, there is plenty of meat for "tech-adjacent" and "tech-interested" people). It tells the story of the Lisp programming language, invented by a genius called John McCarthy in 1958 and today still going strong (to the extent that many people see it as the most powerful programming language in existence).
And this is a time for shameless self promotion, even if you don't plan on buying the book, please repost :-). Self-publishing is self-marketing, so there we go.
