"what the Commission is demanding from Apple" — the European Commission isn't demanding anything, the law is demanding it. The laws have been in place for several years now, Apple is currently in default of the law on several fronts, and is fighting its existing fines. There is no 'position' to be backed down from on the EC's side, and somehow this many years in Apple still doesn't understand that, despite losing every tiny little argument it has kicked up over the DMA. "We had a few contacts with Apple on this matter, this I can confirm. But Apple was simply unable to develop interoperability solutions that meet essential EU privacy and security standards.
Instead of trying to find a suitable compliance solution, Apple simply made a request to the European Commission to be exempted from their interoperability obligations under the DMA.
And this for at least 18 months on top of it. Guess what? That's not an option."
