I was at the opticians, ordering new specs, and the optician's name badge said Kayleigh! There's a few around.
I became acutely conscious of the fact I was wearing a Marillion T-shirt, and perhaps just about old enough to be her father. They hate us for it, you know.
Trump's remarks about the US Medal of Honor would get you sacked in Europe.
Witness the backlash against Rishi Sunak leaving the D-Day commemorations early, eager to get back on the campaign trail. That's not the only reason they lost, but still.
@rbreich I'm no capitalist (or economist), but regarding the stock buybacks...
I've a bit more faith in private companies with a clear sense of their market, than public companies whose random investors care more about the share price than the product. This faith may be misguided; private companies aren't necessarily more ethical, scrupulous, or efficient, yet they are often more focused on quality.
Dell computers and Theakstons brewery are some private buybacks that interested me this way.
@TonyStark Medicine and food scarcely amounts to communism. It's not even particularly left-wing.
Even right-wing, one-nation Tory, paternalistic, smug-saviour policies endorse affordable food and medicine. In Europe these days, at least (Though they'd like to privatise the delivery.)
Capitalism relies upon an available pool of labour, after all; the healthier the better, otherwise efficiency and quality suffer.
I came to a startling realisation today.
Hawkwind is *not* an anagram of mind-wank.
Not a lot of people know that!
Casting Basil Brush as SUTEKH was a brilliant move. The way he cradles the TARDIS with his left arm and cape!
If they just replaced the Apple cove with a deep-fake of Kenneth Williams, it would be easier to take it seriously.
@stevesplace @rbreich
The OP talked about CEOs getting millions, not billions. Billionaire bosses are far less common.
Here's my maths, different angle. Never mind raises; who gets to have a job at all?
$15/hour * 40 hour/week * 52 week/year = $31,200/year
$1million bonus / 31.2K/employee = 32.05 employees.
So, for every $1M a CEO gets in bonus, 32 employees could be retained for a year instead!
N.B. I ignored costs like pension/training/healthcare, so maybe 20 employees.
