TIL that Étienne is the French variant of Stephen, which surprised me because I assumed Stephen was French.

This led me to look up Stephen of Blois, a poorly regarded usurper-king of England. Sure enough in French he is called Étienne d‘Angleterre (because in French the distinguishing thing about him is the ruling England, not the being from Blois).

Which is how I learned that Stephen of Blois/Étienne d’Angleterre had one of the best coats of arms I’ve ever seen. Behold the lion-centaur:
