Riding a slave through Canada π¨π¦ circa 2019
Red tailed hawk, I believe. Pretty cool watching these circle the sky this morning looking for food.
#Abandoned Black Canyon City Dog Track in 2015. I had to pull a jumping cactus outta Kelly's hand on the way back to the car and I swear it took an hour. Good times exploring. Hard to believe this was over ten years ago.
Before I went down to SC to work last April, I gathered a bunch of recycled 2x4's, pallets, bricks (from the abandoned brick factory), and random pieces of plywood to build this little hobo hut by the train tracks. Plenty of train kids roll through that yard. It's one of my favorite spots to grab trains. I thought it'd be cool to build a small leanto hut where you could chill, watch freight, and wait on a train outta the rain. It took me a few days to backpack all the materials in and build it. The only materials I used that weren't recycled were the OSB for the roof, screws/nails, and the tarp for the roof. My friend sent me a picture of it the other day. I'm glad it's still there.
I went from this a week ago to a winter wonderland of snow and sleet. I have never seen this much snow in my hometown since I was a kid, back when we jumped off the roof into snowdrifts, built snowmen, had snowball fights with the neighborhood kids, went down the street shoveling driveways to hustle and make money, and built igloos that zigzagged through the yard. Wild times. Vermont is getting dumped on, too. Looks like I'm stuck here for a little longer. Hats off to all the protesters, and another reminder, fuck authoritarianism and the current state of our government βοΈ
Watching the sunrise at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge the other day.
Mattamuskeet Wildlife Refuge had several hundred Tundra Swan. It was an unexpected sight to see. I randomly ended up here the other day when I was cruising through NC.
I have been taking more time to appreciate everything around me now that this gig is over and I'm on my way back north trying to figure out my next move. This drive back has been low and slow rolling along the back roads with no particular stop in mind. It's been nice to soak in the scenery, see the birds, sunrises and sunsets and just camp wherever. Life is good β
#Exploring a bando in OBX the other day near Pea Island.
Glad I drove up along the coast, followed random backroads to nowhere, and went to towns strictly on whether I thought the name was cool or not...like Hobucken, NC, not to be confused with Hoboken, NJ. I can't say I'm super stoked on car camping. It's depressing to see the depths that mass surveillance has taken in this country and the lack of primitive camping is pretty disgraceful, but I guess that is what attracted me to freight trains. Riding this out until a walking tax is imposed.
