Trans woman on a weird bike.

I build and ride strange-but-practical bikes, do occasional fiber crafts, try to make interesting things & fix broken things, read way too much fiction, and sometimes write it as well.

Brought home a christmas tree tonight and now one of my panniers smells like christmas tree.

I should probably clean it at some point, but for now... sniffs pannier ...mmm, good smell.

hi frens. i am a low-on-totem-pole volunteer at trans rescue (so low that they wouldn't even recognise my name, that low).

our masto account is on dot-social and we're finally getting traction to reconsider the instance on which we live. can anyone recommend a well-federated, well-run instance that upholds our values ? many of us are on such instances. promote yours ! (mine fails the well-federated test and i like it that way but when one needs a huge bullhorn, this may not be the best source)

Reposting from someone on another platform (with permission) because I feel like I've seen articles posted on here that would fit this description...

does anyone have articles or opinion pieces in their back pocket that they can link me to that describe intersections between COVID and other systemic injustices? I'm working on a paper for my PhD and I'm using covid to make the argument that periods of crisis get narrated as crisis when they pose a threat to the status quo, and crisis gets narrated as ordinary when action to prevent the crisis poses more of a threat to the status quo.

I wanna drop in reference to intersections with things like economic inequality or prisons (or anything else I'm sure there are loads of intersections) to point out that part of why covid 'ended' was that addressing it properly was starting to pose a threat to neoliberal normality.

(and this is a topic of interest to me as well!)

Seeking recommendations for nice headphones:

  • over-the-ear type, with large ear cups (is that the term?)
  • bluetooth connectivity just works with minimal fussing (some devices IME seem to be much better at this and I don't know why)
  • reasonably intuitive controls; strong preference for physical buttons

Bonus features would be an aux input jack that allows for using them as wired headphones and maybe the option of noise cancelling.

Someone asked how I was even able to ride in this weather. (It's not that bad; barely more snow than a PDX "snowpocalypse", a.k.a. a few inches.)

Me: "Studded tires and persistence?"

Cycling in (urban, so mostly driven-on or kinda plowed) snow is probably easier when you're not towing a trailer, right? I guess I'll find out in the next few days!

What are good options for having a virtual watch party these days?

I'm thinking something where a handful of people can join an audio/video call (also with text chat) and watch a movie together.

Preference for something that's really designed for this - I've tried to do it with regular screen sharing on a video call and it has not been great.

@jepyang
make a movie out of Kiss Her Once For Me, you cowards

Speaking of 3M 6000 respirator exhale valve filters (niche topic much? 😆): If you happen to have spare exhale filters but the little tabs that hook on the mask are broken (niche problem much? 😆) you can actually pop open the plastic cartridge and swap out the circles of filter material.

Maybe I'll even try cutting little circles of N95 or surgical mask material for situations when I'm not as concerned about exhale filtration.

Also, I got studded tires today. Haven't put them on yet, but I think I'll need them soon.
