the ontological opposite of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl would be a Depressive Goblin Nightmare Boy, and in my sojourns I've seen enough to conclude that these, too, are popular
@garbados are they at least suffering beautifully?
@byttyrs hi could you put a "NSFW" tag on this
I wonder if this is the year when they'll finally save up enough to get those doctors a border
@dankwraith basically: the market's as lousy right now as it has been at any time since 1983 (citation needed), but if you kids really aspire to mix business and pleasure like that, the best thing you can do to prepare for when the pendulum swings back is to have a solid foundation of hard skills, such as "really knowing how to program" and "figuring things out without asking an AI"
I have, to my embarrassment and shame, witnessed AI code review catching a genuine mistake that I missed. just the one time, but I cannot deny that it happened and that I saw it happen
@dankwraith pivot from there to focus on the craft rather than the commerce. things that are important for beginning hobbyists to learn
@dankwraith nobody wants to govern any more

This essay, translated from Japanese, is ostensibly about why platformers scroll from left to right, but it provides so much context that it also acts as a good primer for video game hardware and game dev culture in 1980s Japan

@sarahtaber I appreciate what you're saying here, and am grateful, but I'm having to intentionally stop thinking about how this could be interpreted as "the bastards got away with it every previous time"
