Abundance is possible with tree crops! I experiment with growing a variety of species of fruit trees in North Florida.

The global switch to renewable energy has passed a “positive tipping point”, according to two United Nations reports released on Tuesday.

We dug up two hundred plus pound kadushi cactus plants (Cereus repandus) and wrestled them into a vehicle. These plants didn't make the cut - their fruits are too bland. Trying to have only best flavored individuals in the breeding project. Seth was willing to take the plants as ornamentals.
'Skinner' mulberries starting to ripen. This var has excellent flavor, and reportedly is near everbearing. Biggest challenge in my area is its tendency to break dormancy too early, making it susceptible to frost damage.

In the northern hemisphere, now is the time of year you should check your local public carob trees to see which are capable and reliable bearers.

There's a range of bearing times and they're not only affected by your local climate, but by the individual plant's timing. But from Aug - Nov is a good ballpark range for most Northern hemisphere #carob harvests.

I've just got to say how happy I am with the Mastodon community, especially all the science/space people that I'm following. This place is the clear winner after the social media meltdown, despite its outstanding issues and missing features.

What makes me even more excited is that it's open and unmonetized, so it's completely immune to shareholder demands or the whim of a billionaire.

Don't worry if your friends aren't here yet, we're your new friends.

My two Cereus repandus 'Kiwi Sunrise' plants recently had 6 blooms.

I pollinated two blooms from another cultivar, selfed the other 4.

All 4 self-pollinated blooms dropped off; 1 of the 2 cross pollinated blooms dropped. Very small sample size, but so far no evidence that KS can self pollinate.

I'll keep tracking. This is a promising fruit species, & I want to be able to tell people which cvrs are self pollinating (you only need a single plant to get fruit). #cactus #Cereus #kadushi

A new-to-me variety of kadushi fruit cactus is flowering for the first time this morning. A local collector sampled fruit from a number of local plants, said this one is best. He says it tastes like Capri Sun, or kiwi fruit and strawberries. He named it variety 'Kiwi Sunrise'. I look forward to tasting it. So far it seems to flower abundantly - in addition to the bloom & large buds visible here, there are numerous small flower buds emerging.

It feels as though people living like it's 2020 are having a really hard time with people living like it's 2019 and people living like it's 2023 are caught in the middle.

The almond leaf is on top of the peach-almond hybrid leaf here. You can see the almond has much less apparently spongy material in its leaves. It is built to be in a drier environment and to do everything it can not to lose water.

The hybrid has a lot more of the peach qualities. The petiole is shorter, the leaves are longer and beneath its epidermal layer are larger spongier areas. It inherited more peach quality to its leaves.
