My guess: both authors die and the publishing companies and/or heirs hire some hacks to come in and "finish" the books to be published posthumously

wow. I had no idea there were places where you need town approval to pick a tree trimmer.

Can I at least assume that the tree company has to pay for the repairs, and not you?

I have already forgotten whatever pap I read the first couple of days but I am currently reading both "Walk With Me (A Biography of Fannie Lou Hamer)" by Kate Clifford Larson and "Nona the Ninth" by Tamsyn Muir. Which is considerable my hifalutin than normal for me.
